Election 2011
Imagine Canada Election Kit 2011
To help you engage during the election we are providing you with this 2011 Election Kit which includes, among other tools, a number of briefing notes on key issues facing the sector that have been identified through our National Engagement Strategy as well as DOs and DON'Ts for Charities during an election campaign.
And to help keep you all stay informed during the campaign, we are launching a special election newsfeed service that you may want to subscribe to for this period. And of course follow us on our Blog, our website, on Facebook, LinkedIn, and on Twitter.
Election Questionnaire Responses from Federal Parties
At the beginning of the federal election campaign, Imagine Canada asked each of the federal parties to respond to a questionnaire about some of the issues important to our sector. This questionnaire was included in the Election Kit.
Each of the five major parties responded to our request, and we are now pleased to share their responses here.
The Conservative Party of Canada informed Imagine Canada that as a matter of policy it does not respond to questionnaires of this nature.
The responses of the other four major parties are:
Did you know that there are 161,000 nonprofilts and charities in Canada?
Did you know that Canada’s nonprofit and voluntary sector is the 2nd largest in the world?
The sector represents $79.1 billion or 7.8% of the gross domestic product
The sector is larger than automotive and manufacturing. It generates $112 billion in revenues and employs 2 million people
Canadians donated $10 billion in 2007
Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick have the highest donor rates.
Canadians volunteered 2.1 billion hours in 2007
Young Canadians aged 15 to 24 are more likely to volunteer than Canadians in any other age group
One percent of nonprofits command 60% of all revenues flowing to the sector
Canadians with the lowest household incomes give a greater percentage of their income than others
