Senate study on the charitable and nonprofit sector
In the spring of 2017, Senator Terry Mercer put forward a motion to have a Special Committee formed in the Senate to carry out a wide-ranging study on the future of the charitable and nonprofit sector. In January 2018, the Senate approved the study of the charitable sector, and a Special Committee on the Charitable Sector was created. The members of the Senate Special Committee are Terry M. Mercer (Chair), Ratna Omidvar (Deputy Chair), Mike Duffy, Diane Griffin, Yonah Martin, Linda Frum, and Nancy Greene Raine.
The Committee is scheduled to report by December 31, 2018 and has a broad mandate to consider the impact of laws, regulations, and government policies on charities and nonprofits. This could include anything, from whether the definition of charity should be modernized, to issues that have a real impact on your day-to-day operations, like improvements to how grants and contributions are administered.
