OTTAWA, ON – Tonight 500 leaders and supporters of Canada’s charitable and nonprofit sector will come together in Ottawa ultimately in search of finding better ways to serve communities here in Canada and around the world. The National Summit for the Charitable and Nonprofit Sector, more than two years in the making, will help Canada’s charities and nonprofits explore new ways to finance their work, attract the best possible staff and volunteers and create a new dialogue with Canadians about the sector’s impact.
The National Summit is hosted by Imagine Canada, Community Foundations of Canada, Philanthropic Foundations Canada, and United Way Centraide Canada and will take place in Ottawa from November 28 to 30, 2011. It will be an inter-generational event with more than 100 young and emerging leaders in attendance and participating online.
His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, will deliver the keynote address to delegates, at the Delta Hotel Ottawa City Centre, on Tuesday, November 29, 2011, at 9:15 a.m. (All participants of this plenary must be seated by 8:40 a.m. Latecomers will not be admitted). National Chief Shawn Atleo will deliver the second keynote address to delegates, on Wednesday, November 30, 2011, at 9:10 a.m. Other speakers include Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi on the role of the sector in building vibrant and resilient communities, social commentator Allan Gregg on where charities and nonprofits sit on the radar screens of decision-makers, the media and the public, Emmanuelle Hébert, co-Founder of MU in Montreal, on community and citizen engagement, and Canadian Astronaut Julie Payette on collaboration, teamwork, and forward thinking.
“The intent of this next leg of the National Engagement Strategy is to identify concrete actions that will propel us forward” says Marcel Lauzière, President & CEO of Imagine Canada. “Real progress for our sector, and for the people we serve, will only come from strong collaboration, mutual accountability, and collective action.”
