Imagine Canada’s Chief Economist for Canada’s Charitable and Nonprofit Sector today released Charities in Canada as an Economic Sector, a discussion paper by Chief Economist Brian Emmett and co-author Geoffrey Emmett. The paper is an invitation to Canadians, governments, businesses and communities to not only think of charities as purpose driven but also as an essential component driving Canada’s economy.
“The charitable and nonprofit sector represents 8.1% of Canada’s GDP and 10.5% of the labour force,” says Bruce MacDonald, president and CEO of Imagine Canada. “With Canada Day celebrations just around the corner, we wanted Canadians to understand and celebrate the fact that charities, in addition to being interwoven in the social fabric of our society, are an important source of jobs, innovation and growth within the Canadian economy.”
Discussed in Charities in Canada as an Economic Sector:
- Role and scope of the charitable sector in the Canadian economy
- The charitable sector as a small business sector
- Productivity and innovation in the charitable sector
- The charitable sector as a place to work
- Revenue and funding sources for charitable organizations
- Policy implications
