In support of pay transparency in the nonprofit sector

News

The adoption of hiring practices that are fair, equitable, and conscious of systemic barriers that unfairly impact members of equity-seeking groups is of vital importance for employers, especially for nonprofit sector employers who seek to support these communities. Being open and clear about the salary range offered through a job posting is one of the first steps toward ensuring greater pay equity for all staff regardless of identity.

In June 2021, FoodShare released an open letter (see: A Call for Compensation on Job Posts) calling on Charity Village to require organizations that post job applications on its platform - the largest nonprofit job board in Canada - to #ShowTheSalary. To date, the requested change has not been made to Charity Village's protocols for job postings.

Over a year ago, our team at Imagine Canada embarked on an anti-racism and anti-oppression journey. We have been working to engage and improve our internal practices, as well as reflect on the ways we can leverage our privileged position and voice in the sector to help advance equity issues. We took some time to consider the actions that we could take to raise awareness about pay transparency and help lead to a meaningful change within the nonprofit sector. We are continuing to review all aspects of our work to support this important goal.

In full support of pay transparency, Imagine Canada has signed FoodShare’s open letter. This means that Imagine Canada will no longer be using Charity Village’s job board for its hiring opportunities as long as pay information isn’t made mandatory. We encourage others to read the letter and to reflect on their own hiring practices.

We thank those who have championed the #ShowTheSalary movement, including Foodshare and the many nonprofit organizations that have signed the letter so far.
